Please, love your psoas!

IMG_4702 IMG_4703 IMG_4704

The psoas is a hip flexor, which can compress the spine when it’s upset.  It generally gets upset if we are stressed, or if it’s damaged, or if you don’t pay attention to it.  It loves being stretched right out & moved without any help from the spine or tilting of the hips.  Due to it’s physiological position, if it is restricted you can experience a myriad of uncomfortable & painful symptoms, such as:  compression of the lumbar spine, sciatic pain, general tiredness, sore neck (who’d have guessed?), constipation, painful periods, lack of laughter, and of course a sore back.  The tightening process slowly develops over a long time – always tightening – never releasing.  Generally speaking, it’s extremely difficult to release the psoas muscle yourself – and it’s not a pleasant thing to do.  Once the psoas has been released it’s like the world is once again in colour!  You can breathe freely, you feel lighter, you may laugh out of sheer relief.  How do you know if your psoas is tight?  Generally speaking, if your lower back arches too much, your hip flexors are likely to be too active.  The exercise above is called the “Leg Lift & Stretch.”  Ensure your hips & spine are in a neutral position while slightly raising your foot about an inch off the ground, then slowly stretch the leg right out, & then back again.  Completely stop & reset your spine & hips before beginning the exercise once again.

To free up & give your psoas the love & attention it craves, book in to either have it physically reset with massage, or participate in a Pilates lesson in your very own Clontarf studio, on the beautiful Redcliffe Peninsula.

Myofascial Stretching – how to beat chronic muscle pain.

What is Myofascial therapy & is it the right treatment for me? image
This form of massage is necessary for treating long term (years) pain. It releases the tissue that encases & surrounds the muscle – allowing movement & nourishment to reach the restricted tissue. I use a series of stretches – which should not be painful – to encourage the fascia to release. When the fascia has been released I can then use contemporary massage methods to successfully release any further muscle tension. This technique should continue to ‘unwind’ the affected area for up to 72 hours.

Wikipedia states: Myofascial release (or MFR) is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. Self-myofascial release (or SMFR) refers to someone performing this therapy on themself. This alternative medicine therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles.[1]

Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body, including muscle. Fascia supports and protects these structures. Osteopathic theory proposes that this soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow. Although fascia and its corresponding muscle are the main targets of myofascial release, other tissue may be addressed as well, including other connective tissue.[1]

Training over 50’s

I love helping people.  It’s what I do best.  Working with people who have health issues & specific needs is a normal part of being a Personal Trainer.  I am filled with dismay when I speak to people who have specific needs, & go to take the big step to better their life & health & fitness, only to be treated like a number & asked to perform tasks that their bodies cannot yet do.  This is heartbreaking for me to hear, but I can’t imagine how distressing it can be for someone to feel like they can’t make it.  You can make it.  You can overcome.  You need someone who listens & modifies exercises so you can do it now.  You need achievable goals set for you & someone to be accountable to, so you are motivated to do those exercises & stretches.  If you know someone who is ready to make the empowering step to better their predicament, please let them know there is someone who is determined to help them – at their body’s pace.

See training and being healthy means different things depending on your current age, health, and general state. You’re not going to ask a 23 year old who never plays sports to do the same things as a 23 year old who was been playing football his whole life, for example. Being out of shape or not young anymore are similar, in that you start slow, doing what you can, and progressing from there. I have built a gym for my home over the years, always being on the lookout for Primo Fitness USA used exercise equipment that I can afford to have a more complete workout. I am able to provide a more private experience, much different from a normal gym, where there is no pressure and/or judgement, only support. I aim to keep you motivated and celebrate your reached goals with you while keeping you safe and at your own pace.

Playground fun

So I’m sitting here at a beautiful Redcliffe park, watching my son & other kids playing on some pretty cool equipment, thanks to the Moreton Bay Regional Council.

A thought occurs.  When do we stop enjoying movement like a child does?  Why?  Are we too tired? Too sore?  Too busy?

Simply running around for a child is enjoyable,  the endorphins pump through their little bodies, giving them a natural high.

They stop when they’re hungry or tired – or when we drag them away!

How much healthier would we as a society be, if we played more often? and maybe take a little break of our devices,  though if you want to do something after a little break from the exercise you can try online games, you can  get professional gaming services and understand a little better about this, and you will see how this might help to free yourself from sore muscles, and of course if the reason you can’t play is because of pain – then I can certainly help.

The very first post on my first website! From a skydiver’s point of view, I owe a lot of beer right now… From a fitness professional’s point of view, as I’ve been sitting for a long period of time, I’d better get my heart rate up by running up & down the stairs, or do a few push-ups…
From a Remedial Massage Therapist’s point of view, I’d better do a few stretches to stop my fascia from tightening up in my ‘old’ injuries.

The weather’s a bit dreary here in Redcliffe, so comfort food will be high on the agenda today. Make sure you either watch the kilo joule intake, or earn your meal first, to save your body from storing all that good nutrition as extra cushioning fat cells.

Nice to meet you & I hope you enjoy the ride – I find it amusing at times, too.
